What is Mold

Mold is a natural part of the environment and their spores are therefore also found indoors. The multiplication of mold indoors, however, is a hygienic problem. Usually, the fungal spores found indoors come from the outside air. Those from indoor sources would be a clear sign of an existing mold infestation. Their spread depends on local conditions. This includes ventilation, as well as the structural situation of the examined rooms. The outside air conditions, which depend on the seasons, also influence the fungal spore concentration.
How and Where Does Mold Grow

Mold needs moisture to grow. If mold occurs in living rooms and spreads over a larger area, the remediation of the mold infestation can quickly lead to considerable costs. In order to be able to remove mold infestation sensibly and avoid it in the future, the causes must be clarified. A common assumption is that the living rooms start to mold when the residents do not ventilate enough and do not heat sufficiently.

In about 10% of cases, this is the sole cause of mold in the home. In an estimated 60% of cases, structural defects are responsible, while a good 30% are caused by a combination of construction defects and incorrect ventilation or the lack of a ventilation system. In the modernized old building and in the new building there is a tendency to mold more often than in the old stock.

How do Molds get Inside

Mold is a collective term for fungi that can form typical fungus threads and spores and thus become visible as an (often colored) mold covering. Mold forms cell threads in the growth phase, which, however, are normally not visible to the naked eye in this phase. For propagation and spreading, mold form asexual distribution organs, which are summarized under the term "spores". Since the asexual spores are usually produced in large numbers and are often colored, the molds are visible to the naked eye at this stage (e.g. as mold stains).

How Do Molds Affect People

Mold spores are among the most important indoor allergens. Scientific studies have shown that residents and workers have an increased health risk due to intensive and long contact with mold. The higher the concentration, the higher the potential risk. The most common health effects on people are inflammation of the mucous membranes and conjunctiva, runny nose and allergic asthma. Furthermore, scientific research results show that mold in the living area increases the likelihood of a respiratory illness. Dwellings contaminated with mold and other microorganisms are a particular risk for children. In children, it was also shown that an increased indoor air concentration of Penicillium species is significantly related to the outbreak of childhood asthma.

Scientific research has focused more and more on the toxins and cell components released by mold and other microorganisms, especially in recent years. It is believed that these substances and particles are also responsible for the symptoms observed. One of the possible health reactions of the body to an increased mold concentration in the interior is the occurrence of allergies that are triggered by inhalation of spores. It is assumed that basically all molds are capable of triggering allergic reactions in susceptible people. In the case of allergies, the body's immune system does not defend itself against dangerous foreign substances (e.g. pathogens) but wrongly defends itself against foreign substances which are harmless per se (such as pollen, components of food).

The first contact with the foreign substance (antigen) does not cause an allergic reaction, but the body prepares to fight the foreign substance by producing antibodies (antibodies). Such a person is called "sensitized". Only with renewed contact with the foreign substance can allergic phenomena occur, in which a whole chain of reactions takes place in the body, at the end of which there are the typical symptoms of allergic reactions such as runny nose, sneezing, red eyes, rash, etc.

Who Is At Risk

Visible and invisible mold can cause serious and sometimes permanent illnesses. These range from irritation to allergies to infections. The first symptoms such as headache or insomnia are not always clear and, in some cases, it takes a long time for those affected to get the right diagnosis and treatment.

Whether there is a health hazard from mold spores depends on their concentration and the type of mold. Smaller amounts of mold spores can also get into the room via the outside air, but these low concentrations are generally harmless, since they leave the room quickly when properly ventilated. If molds affect walls, ceilings, floors or furnishings in the living room, the concentration of mold spores in the room air increases. In this case, regular ventilation no longer helps to eliminate the mold, but only professional remediation.

In particular for people whose immune system has already been weakened by a (chronic) previous illness, mold in the living room is a great danger. Diseases of the cardiovascular system or respiratory diseases, for example, generally make people more susceptible to infections and toxins. Infants and children can also suffer permanent damage.

Children are more sensitive to environmental toxins and have not yet developed sufficient defenses. Your allergy risk increases if you live in a mold-contaminated apartment.

Certain symptoms may indicate health problems caused by mold. The problem here is that these signs are usually not clearly due to mold, but can also occur in a variety of other diseases. The symptoms and diseases that can be caused by mold in the home include:

Respiratory problems, allergic reactions, asthma, bronchitis
Sore throat, hoarseness, cough
Abdominal pain, nausea, digestive problems
Headache or migraine
States of exhaustion, fatigue, insomnia
Burning, red eyes
Rash, eczema, redness
Fungal diseases with an unexplained background
Lung and heart disease
Infectious diseases

Certain symptoms may indicate a mold-borne illness. If the cause of the disease is unknown, doctors and patients should consider and clarify this possible reason. If mold is found or suspected in a home or business, the health risks should be taken seriously. A thorough removal of the mold is absolutely necessary.
